2011 Indianapolis Colts
The fact that the Indianapolis Colts have never had a solid backup for four-time MVP Payton Manning and now that the future Hall of Famer is struggling with his recovery from offseason neck surgery. "I was short-changed a little bit by the lockout and I'm going to need every bit of the next two weeks, and then I can give you more of an update with where I am I have made progress,” Manning said recently. “But I still have some work to do. When I'm healthy enough, I'll be able to play." Meanwhile, team owner Jim Irsay was recently in Hattiesburg, LA, the hometown of former NFL QB Brett Favre and tweeting about it. With backups Curtis Painter and Dan Orlovsky combining for 19-43 for 273 yards while producing one touchdown and a field goal, Favre may just be the answer. Question is, will Favre want to be a game-manager when Manning does return?
First round draft pick OT Anthony Casatonzo has won the LT position and coaches are pleased with his performance so far. Lineman Ben Ijalana, a second round pick, seems to have made an impact at the OT position and RB Delone Carter may be the backup behind Joseph Addai. Also, undrafted TE Mike McNeil has made an impact on his coaches as has undrafted LB Chris Colasanti. Both should make the squad.
The Colts are again cocked and loaded for bear. The true question is whether Payton Manning can fully recover and get back to his former MVP self. Barring that happening, the Colts will be there again for the playoffs for their 10th consecutive season.
